Winter is the season when a lot of stuff dies. Some plants go dormant, trees lose leaves and it is cold. It is the time to prune the roses and other bushes in preparation for spring. Where I live, winter is the rainy season, so we have days when it is cold and wet and the sun is hidden behind the clouds. Indoors is dark without the light of the sun streaming through the windows. It is a time when sitting out on the deck is not as comfortable.

But it is also the time for fire pits and sitting around the fire comfortably, telling stories, catching up, even some singing depending on the group. These can be immeasurably precious times where memories are made and souls are reset. There is something comforting and magical about a fire, either in the fireplace or in the firepit. Stress and worry seem to melt away in it’s warmth and glow as you watch the flames. This is the only time of year we can enjoy a firepit as we have a fire ban the rest of the year.

When I think of firepits, I think back to covid and quarantine and Sam experimenting, creating dishes and deserts in the coals of the fire. Posting his efforts with much hilarity. His curious, fun nature sparkling through every frame. Lots of tin foil was involved. He kept us entertained with each endeavor. Some worked and some failed spectacularly but none squashed his enthusiasm to try again the next day, either perfecting what he thought would work next time or creating something new.

Winter is also the time for rugs, and hot chocolate and comfy sweaters. You learn about layering to keep warm, especially early mornings, and removing layers as you warm up through the day. In some places, frost and snow make things colder. Luckily, in my corner of the world with plenty of days of sunshine and the temperature above 20 degrees C. Because it is the rainy season here, we also have flowers that bloom in winter in an array of colours that have us anticipating the beauty of spring that is just around the corner.

The days are shorter and often the longer nights help us to get more sleep, replenish our batteries. I like to curl up with a book and a rug and a mug of hot chocolate or have an afternoon nap under the covers to keep warm. I don’t like driving in the rain so tend to stay home when we’re having a rainy day unless absolutely unavoidable.

In the southern hemisphere, August is the last month of winter.
